Anaesthetised, but awake

I close my eyes and it begins.

The sky is dark, menacing. Lightning flashes on the distant horizon. Thunder grumbles, ever more threatening. The waves surge, subside and surge again. Higher this time. Heavy rain, sea spray like needles. Land nowhere in sight.

And there’s me. Do you see me? There, in that tiny boat? So small, so vulnerable. Tossed about like a three-year-old’s ragdoll. Alone…
